Which Sunscreen Are You Taking On Your Vacation?

In June, 2011, an article was featured on another one of my blog sites, entitled “Sunscreens Are Damaging Our Planet” .  I hope you’ll take the time to learn about this important subject and take measures to adjust what you do in your everyday life and when you’re on vacation.

This article opened my eyes to the slow destruction humans have done over the years, particularly through traveling.  I didn’t realize until I did the research how important the coral reef systems are and how it is being slowly destroyed unknowingly, just by the chemical-based sunscreen and sunblock products that people use when they’re swimming, snorkeling, surfing, jet-skiing and scuba-diving.

The source of most of that article and my awareness was a result of learning about the nasty crap in most sunscreen and sunblock products – the ones you buy at Walmart, Target, the grocery store, and even some of the sunscreens and sunblocks on the market that claim to be “pure, natural, safe for the environment, yadda, yadda”.

I applaude (and I hope you will as well) the work done by the people behind companies like Envy Organics who make it their life’s work to produce suncreens, sunblocks and other everyday beauty products with ONLY the most natural ingredients – the ones that God put on this earth (He knew what he was doing!)

Envy Organics Suncare Travel SetYou can buy these all natural, organically-based sunscreen, sunblock and everyday beauty products through my website (the travel set pictured to the left comes in convenient travel-size bottles which are approved by TSA as carry-on.  It comes with:  SPF 8, SPF 15, Pure Aloe & Tea Tree Recovery Gel and Rose Hip Aloe Lotiona After Sun Skin Conditioner).  If you happen to stay at one of 200+ resorts including Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Sandals & Beaches, you will find the same high-quality products under a different name (Absolutely Natural).

Let’s all be better stewards of this earth…

We are stewards of God’s earth, ruling over that which is not ours. “You [God] made humans ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under our feet: All flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas,” Ps 8:6-8.

El Paradero Inn, Santa Fe Bed & Breakfast

In November 2010, while on a road trip through several western states including Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada & Utah, I had the pleasure of staying at El Paradero Inn in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

One of the uniquely-appointed rooms at El Paradero Inn

This was one of the highlights of the 3,000+ mile trip.  I chose El Paradero based on its location, price, reviews, and the fact that it was pet-friendly. Our ultimate destination was a three-day dog agility trial in Boulder City, Nevada and we were traveling with my Welsh Corgi “Winnie Fast & Furious”.

We arrived in the late afternoon, trying to rush off to meet a friend for a late lunch in Santa Fe’s Old Town Square.  If you’re traveling to or through Santa Fe, New Mexico this is a must-do!

Here, you’ll find many art galleries, shops with very unique clothing, jewelry, artwork, sculptures and souvenirs.  Many of these shops operate out of cool little courtyards that really keep the feel of the area inviting as well as the historic significance.  Another item of note is that Santa Fe, New Mexico is one the original towns  included in “Route 66″.

The Dining Room at El Paradero

The Dining Room

By the time we finished eating and visiting, we missed getting to see the inside of the St. Francis Basilica Cathedral. Oh well, it’s worth another trip back for sure!

With many great choices in Santa Fe, I was certainly lucky (or perhaps skilled) to have picked this neat little Bed & Breakfast. My only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. One night just wasn’t enough to enjoy the full ambiance, great food and wonderful surroundings of the El Paradero Inn.

What prompted me to share my experience at El Paradero, was the recent meeting of Marybeth Coulter, a Fine Art Digital Photographer - her pictures are featured hereI saw this picture of the colorful, cute dining room and it brought back the wonderful feeling of afternoon tea, breakfast, and enjoying the company of other guests.

Here’s what Marybeth has to say about El Paradero:

“I love photographing beautiful places I’ve been and stayed. This is El Paradero Inn in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The colors are wonderfully warm and inviting, the decorations a delight, the food amazing, and the staff is highly professional and organized. Thanks for a delightful stay.”  - Marybeth Coulter

Tuscan Villas and Free Thermal Spas

It might seem almost impossible, but when you are staying in Tuscan villas during your holidays in Italy you can also take advantage of free thermal spas located in splendid nature settings with natural pools. You will find the highest concentration of free access thermal baths in the southern part of Tuscany. Here you have the highest underground hot springs activity, with natural pools forming amidst untouched natural settings, such as woods, riverbeds, hillsides and hilltops, providing an opportunity to relax for free.

The clever thing to do is renting Tuscan villas in the southern part of the region.

Enjoy nature's thermal spas in Italy

The areas of Grosseto and Siena are the most advised ones if you are looking forward to spending long days relaxing in the uncontaminated setting of Tuscan thermal spas. The thermal spas of Petriolo are among the hottest ones and deepen their roots in ancient times. They were already known during Etruscan and Roman times, so much that there are remains of the original Roman establishments. The water pours an abundant stream of water at 39°C filling several small pools and a larger one with a nice waterfall. The Farma River flows at the same level of the latter pool, and its clean waters provide for the perfect cool off spot. If you have children, this is the ideal place to take them as the shallow waters, both of the river and the hot spas, are very safe. Bring along some food and beverages to rest under the trees or suntan, you will spend lovely days to remember. These spas are to be found near the town of Monticiano, therefore you should look for your Villa near this town. This is a very green area, covered with woodlands crossed by creeks and rivers.

Manciano, Grosseto – Many Rentals for Tuscan Villas

Another special place is Saturnia located in the Maremma area in the province of Grosseto. Here you will find a series of pools that from the original spring degrade gently towards the river in a natural setting that is quite different from the Petriolo baths. Here woodlands leave space to Mediterranean bush and low raising vegetation to give life to a more wild looking landscape of great charm. This location is also very safe for children and offers spaces for a picnic and to relax. When you are looking for your Tuscan villas near these thermal baths, search for the town of Manciano in the province of Grosseto. You will find many accommodations for rent in this area.

Rent Tuscan Villas in Campiglia d’Orcoa to enjoy the Thermal Springs of Bagni San Filippo

Finally the last thermal baths you should take into consideration, are the springs of Bagni San Filippo, at the foot of Mount Amiata. The white boulder strikes your sight upon arrival. It is the result of sedimentation after years and years of continuous water flowing from the bowels of earth. The hot springs fill a pool where to relax for long hours in the middle of a luxuriant vegetation composed of tall trees and wild flowers. The closest town is Campiglia d'Orcia, where you will surely find some Tuscan villas to rent for your holidays and enjoy daily visits at San Filippo. Moreover, from here you are just half hour away from Bagno Vignoni, another historic thermal baths town with free thermal pools.

In case the wild nature of these beautiful natural environments is a bit too much for you, each one of the thermal spas mentioned above sits near a thermal establishment that uses natural springs to offer a more structured service with modern pools and beauty farm services.
