We did leave twice for something to do in the evening. The shows at the resort were a great attempt by the talented staff, but just not up our alley. A little band or jazz combo in a cocktail area would have suited us a little better.
Downtown Playa del Carmen had plenty of choices to offer and we had a lot of fun there. Weather was good….some rain and more clouds than I am used to seeing in Mexico, but it didn’t spoil anything. I had a massage on a beach…Playa Maroma….while Ron went out on a sport fishing charter boat.
We both loved our experience. The massage area at RIU was out in full view of people walking to the beach or eating lunch in the open air cafeteria. I need more privacy than that. The place that I went to had two cute palapa buildings on stilts, so it was above the beach level and had filmy curtains all around the open windows…it was private enough that no one could look in to see you on the table. Our Funjet rep was actually a rep from Lomas Travel. I will share more details about the ‘golf’ deal if you ever need to refer another client to golfing in Playacar.
Ron did not golf at all when we were down there….Funjet had only specific courses that they want their clients to go to….none of which were the caliber of a good golfer. By the time Ron wandered over to the really nice course right across the road from our resort, it was Saturday and we were leaving the next day and he could not take advantage of the offer the course was offering….his fault for not checking on his own earlier in the week. Funjet and Riu do not encourage guests to use the local course there which by Ron’s terms was” kickass gorgeous”. Even the concierge person at RIU told Ron he could not get on the course at Playacar, so Ron just took his word for it. When he went there to take some practice swings and do some putting practice, which he actually likes to do anyway, he met one of the local golf pros. Two hours later and with a few beers under their belts, Ron came back having enjoyed just the experience of talking with the super nice golf pro at that course. So he was not really disappointed that he didn’t get out golfing. He said “Maybe next time” so I am hopeful that we will return to this area. He caught so many fish…including a barracuda which thrilled him….that it was his great memory to bring home with him.
Back to 20 degrees, but at least it is sunny. Someone had to snowblow our driveway while we were gone. YIPPPEE…we brought him a gift for watching our house and bringing in our mail, so he really earned it since we have a substantial driveway to clear.
Thanks for putting this together so quickly for us. Everything went perfectly from start to finish. Even the flights were on time and we had nice seats.
Muchas Gracias as they say so well in Mexico.
Karen
